When developer Orrin Thompson began platting the area in 1963, on what had been the farming community of Lebanon Township, he planted an actual apple tree at every home in some of the earliest developments, and a few of those original trees are still standing in the Old Town neighborhood today. The city officially incorporated in 1969, and most of its housing, ramblers, split-levels, and two-story Traditionals, went up over the following decades as Apple Valley grew into one of the south metro's most established communities. The Minnesota Zoo, one of only two state-run zoos in the country, opened here in 1978 and remains the city's best-known landmark.
