Understand Your Options After Hail or Wind Damage

Storm damage can leave you with a frustrating question: Is this something I should handle through insurance, or am I better off replacing the siding another way?

Midwest Construction & Remodeling works with Twin Cities homeowners on both insurance-related and out-of-pocket siding replacement projects. The goal is to help you understand the condition of your exterior, what a full replacement would involve, and which path makes the most sense for your situation.

What Happens When a Storm Damages Your Siding?

Hail and wind can affect siding differently depending on your siding’s material and age, as well as the severity of the storm. Sometimes the damage is obvious. Other times, a homeowner may simply know that a significant storm came through and want a professional opinion before deciding what to do next.

The damage shows up differently depending on what your siding is made of, and some of it is easy to miss from the ground.

Vinyl

Hail cracks and chips vinyl, and a hard enough strike can punch a hole straight through a panel. Vinyl also turns brittle in the cold, so a spring hailstorm coming off a Minnesota winter often does more damage than the same storm would in July. Wind works at the seams, loosening panels or tearing them off the wall and exposing the layer underneath.

Fiber Cement

Fiber cement is tougher than vinyl, but hail can still chip the surface and leave cracks or gouges where it hits hardest. The tricky part is that a board can look fine from the driveway while carrying hairline cracks that let moisture in.

Wood

Wood often splinters and cracks under hail, and repeated impacts can knock loose the paint or stain. Once that protective layer is broken, the board underneath may start absorbing moisture, which is where the longer-term trouble begins.

Aluminum and Steel

Metal siding dents and dings. A few dents may be cosmetic, but a serious hailstorm can leave an entire elevation pocked, and wind can crease or peel panels at the edges.

What We Look For During a Siding Inspection

A lot of storm damage is subtle, so an inspection looks beyond obvious cracks and dents. When Midwest Construction & Remodeling evaluates storm-damaged siding, we check the whole exterior system, not just the panels that caught your eye.

That includes:

  • Impact marks across each elevation: cracks, chips, holes, dents, and fractures

  • Panels that have lifted, loosened, or separated from the wall in the wind

  • The age and overall condition of the existing siding

  • Whether a current product can realistically match the existing color and profile

  • Signs of water intrusion or moisture that may have gotten in behind the siding

  • Flashing around windows, doors, and roof-to-wall intersections

  • The condition of the trim, soffit, and fascia that tie into the siding

  • Whether the situation genuinely calls for full replacement or a straightforward repair

  • What it would take to put back a complete, properly finished exterior

The point is to understand what a replacement would actually involve so you can make an informed decision about your next step.

Should You File a Siding Damage Insurance Claim?

Not every damaged exterior automatically needs to become an insurance project.

We work with both retail and insurance-related replacements, so the conversation can start with the siding itself rather than assuming one path from the beginning. Our team helps homeowners understand the scope of the project and navigate the differences between an insurance-related replacement and one being paid for directly.

That can be especially helpful when you’re still trying to answer basic questions such as:

  • Is the damage significant enough to consider replacement?

  • Would a full siding replacement make more sense than trying to preserve an aging exterior?

  • What siding options are available if replacement is needed?

  • How would the project move forward from here?

The specifics of your siding insurance claim will depend on your individual policy and situation, but having a clear understanding of the replacement scope gives you a better place to start.

What If Only Part of the Siding Is Damaged?

Midwest Construction & Remodeling specializes in full siding replacement rather than small repairs or patchwork fixes. In many cases, we believe replacement delivers better long-term results because it creates a consistent exterior and avoids trying to match new materials to older siding.

That doesn’t mean every home needs a full replacement. If the damage is limited and a straightforward repair makes more sense, we’ll tell you that. We’re also happy to point you toward another local contractor we trust for smaller repair work.

Our goal is to help you understand what your siding actually needs, not push you into a larger project than necessary.

What Siding Can You Choose for Replacement?

Midwest offers free siding renderings so homeowners can preview different siding options on their homes before making a final selection.

We install the following two siding systems:

James Hardie Fiber Cement Siding

James Hardie is Midwest’s premium fiber cement option. It can be a good fit for homeowners looking for a more substantial exterior with lower maintenance demands than traditional wood siding.

Exterior Portfolio Vinyl Siding

Exterior Portfolio vinyl offers another low-maintenance option and is available in a range of styles for homeowners replacing an older exterior.

What Can You Expect From the Replacement Process?

Dealing with storm damage is stressful enough without wondering whether your contractor will call you back.

Communication is one of our biggest priorities. We use a process designed to keep homeowners informed from the initial inspection and project scope through product selections, production, and the final walkthrough.

Homeowners can expect proactive updates rather than having to repeatedly chase down information. We also offer conveniences such as online signing and payment, along with self-service rescheduling when needed.

Additionally, during installation, our team uses a Catch-All mesh system extending from the ground toward the soffit to help manage debris around the property.

What If You Decide Not to Use Insurance?

An insurance claim isn’t the only way to move forward with siding replacement.

Midwest also handles out-of-pocket projects and offers flexible payment options for homeowners who prefer to finance part of the investment. The same replacement process and siding choices are available whether the project follows an insurance or retail route.
